The American Civil War, or the War between the States, was fought between 1861 and 1865. It was perhaps one of the most defining and tragic chapters in American history. It is also known as one of the 'modern wars' with a grim preview of what was to come in future conflicts.
The United States did not possess a strong cavalry tradition prior to the Civil War. The War of Independence, War of 1812, and Mexican War provided moments of glory for the few mounted units available, but the U.S. Army did not receive its first permanent cavalry unit until 1833, when American traders expanded their operations onto the Great Plains and encountered hostile Indians who made war from horseback. Despite the growing needs of the frontier, the regular army mustered only five regiments of 'pony soldiers' by the eve of the Civil War.
