The American Civil War, or the War between the States, was fought between 1861 and 1865. It was perhaps one of the most defining and tragic chapters in American history. It is also known as one of the 'modern wars' with a grim preview of what was to come in future conflicts.

The American Civil War was an infantryman's war. Eighty percent of the Union Army and seventy-five percent of the Confederate Army consisted of foot soldiers. Infantry was not only the largest combat branch in the opposing armies, but also the most deadly. Infantrymen inflicted and sustained eighty to ninety percent of the conflict's battle casualties.
